Spring is upon us and in Southwest Colorado that means forthcoming elections for the La Plata Electric Association (LPEA) Board of Directors. Each year, the member-owners of LPEA (anyone with an electric meter account) choose the directors to manage the electric cooperative.
Ballots arrive mid-May, and SJCA is encouraging support for incumbent Tim Wheeler in District 4 (northern La Plata County); Ted Compton in District 3 (city of Durango); and Mark Walser in District 2 (southern La Plata County). These three director candidates will continue momentum at LPEA for cheaper, cleaner, local renewable energy sources than what’s available from our wholesale electric supplier, Tri-State.
Meanwhile, Tri-State is caught between the proverbial rock and hard place. The company is all-in on coal, much to the consternation of Colorado consumers but to the hurrahs of Wyoming coal producers.
Spring also brings renewal and opportunities for outdoor activities. Our first-ever BioBlitz in the HD Mountains will document the remarkable botanical and wildlife values of this remote area southeast of Bayfield.
