Community Planning for Education and Mitigation of Crowds in the Outdoors

March 10, 2021 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Free

In the past year, many of our trails and recreation areas saw doubled increases in visitation.  Learn about the impact of overcrowding on our public lands, and how the state, community, and outdoor recreation industry is handling the strain.

Guest speaker Nathan Fey is Director of the Colorado Office of Outdoor Recreation Industry, which works closely with the Department of Natural Resources. He has recognized the crowding issue, and is formalizing partnerships dedicated to recreation and conservation. Director Fey will be joined by Brent Schoradt, Executive Director of San Juan Mountains Association, to explain SJMA’s public outreach presence, and efforts towards trail rehabilitation, erosion and human waste management.  In addition, he will explain their staff and volunteer  projects designed to mitigate the effects of crowding in our mountains.

Also on hand are local representatives of the outdoor industry (SWCORA), as well as Visit Durango, whose strategic plan calls for Destination Management and optimizing the entire visitor experience with stewardship.
