The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is a federal agency under the U.S. Department of Interior responsible for managing 248.2 million acres of public lands in the United States, mostly located in western states. The agency is also responsible for managing 700 million acres of subsurface mineral estate located beneath federal, tribal, state, and private lands (see Split Estate).
BLM’s land use programs include: grazing management, mining, coal/oil/gas leasing, recreation, forestry, and the National Conservation Lands.

FARMINGTON (NM)
The BLM Farmington Field Office manages over 1.5 million surface acres and 3 million subsurface acres in northwest New Mexico. The office also manages the Alien Run Trail, Angel Peak Scenic Area, Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness, Dunes Vehicle and Glade Run Recreation Areas, Simon Canyon Area of Critical Environmental Concern, and Crow Canyon Petroglyphs.

TRES RIOS (CO)
The BLM Tres Rios Field Office manages over 664,000 acres of public lands and over 1 million subsurface acres in southwest Colorado. The office also manages the Anasazi Heritage Center, Canyon of the Ancients National Monument, the McPhee Reservoir, the San Juan Skyway, and the Alpine Loop Backcountry Byway.

The BLM Gunnison Field Office manages over 600,000 acres of public land in the upper Gunnison River Basin of southwest Colorado. The office also manages the Hartman Rocks, Cochetopa Canyon, Powderhorn Wilderness, and the Alpine Triangle.
