Why We Work on Climate & Energy Issues
Energy production releases immense amounts of hazardous pollution into the air we breathe. Pollutants from oil, gas, and coal react together and create smog, cause the Four Corners Methane Hotspot, and wreak havoc on the health of our communities.
Drilling and mining for fossil fuels severely impacts our local lands and archaeological resources. In the San Juan Basin we have three coal mines and over 40,000 oil and gas wells. The land destruction that occurs to develop these sites is permanent.
Energy production is sucking our community dry. Our coal-fired power plants use up to 1/3 of the San Juan River's flow and fracking one well takes up to 5m gallons of water. In our water scarce region this overuse is unacceptable.
