Mosca Landscape Corridor

Elk migration routes define movement corridors between the higher elevation summering areas of the Weminuche Wilderness and the lower elevation forests in the Piedra Area. The Mosca Corridor is one of the key habitat corridors through the Piedra. Upper Mosca Creek was the location of one of the last trapped grizzlies in the 1950s. High-elevation spruce clearcuts in the 1960s devastated the watershed, but it could recover to serve as a corridor targeted for lynx, marten, grizzly and other similarly far-ranging mammals. The Wild San Juans reserve plan proposes to close all existing roads in this corridor.

30-year-old spruce clearcuts define the wilderness boundaries of the Weminuche and Piedra areas in the Mosca Corridor.
